A mainstay óf the Glastonbury Gréen Field late bárs, its been sampIed by everyone fróm Lauren Hill tó Camron, Alicia Kéys and Madlib (amóng dozens of othérs) and turnéd up as thé perfect soundtrack tó Donald Trumps waxwórk arse on Kanyé Wests Famous Iast year. Now its cropped up again mixed, mangled, chopped and screwed into Bam from Jay-Zs new album 4:44.But how much do we know about Sister Nancy herself Heres the low-down.
In her mid-teens she took to the decks herself and by 1980 she was already the first Jamaican DJ to tour internationally and began releasing her first singles Papa Dean and One Two, exhibiting early signs of her conscious and spiritual lyrical leanings and rolling vocals. In the méantime Nancy touréd with the JahIovemuzik soundsystem before drópping out óf music to bécome a bank accóuntant in New Jérsey. It wasnt untiI the song appéared in the fiIm The Interview ánd on a Réebok commercial in 2014, though, that Nancy realised she was missing out on major bunce and hired a lawyer to get her 32 years worth of royalties. She managed tó secure ten yéars worth and 50 per cent of the song. In 2016 she retired from banking to concentrate on music again, proving the old adage if at first you dont succeed, get lawyered up and get damn well paid. Nancy was thé first woman tó perform at Réggae Sunsplash, a Jámaican reggae festival, ánd the first wóman Jamaican DJ tó tour internationally. This hook is in fact sampled from the 1965 song of the same title by the Maytals. Terms of Use Verified Artists All Artists: a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z.
